Compliant from Mundra to Rotterdam.
The European Union is one of the most demanding agricultural-import destinations in the world — strict pesticide MRLs (Reg 396/2005), mandatory border health checks for many categories, EU Organic certification required for organic claims (Reg 2018/848), and TRACES NT electronic pre-notification for some product categories. India–EU bilateral agricultural trade exceeded USD 3 billion in 2024, led by spices, basmati rice, cashews, and tea.
Aethon Overseas is an APEDA-registered, FSSAI-licensed Indian agricultural exporter shipping to European importers via Mundra and JNPT to Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Felixstowe, and Genoa. Every EU-bound shipment ships with NABL COA on the EU MRL panel, EU-format Phytosanitary Certificate, and (on request) EU Organic certification under Regulation 2018/848.

What European Buyers Need to Know
How European importers source Indian agricultural products — pesticide compliance, organic certification, TRACES NT, Brexit-era UK customs, and port-of-entry strategy.
1. EU MRL Panel (Reg 396/2005)
EU Maximum Residue Levels are commodity- and pesticide-specific. We test every EU-bound shipment at NABL-accredited labs against the full EU MRL panel for the destination commodity (e.g., chlorpyrifos, glyphosate, ethylene oxide).
Common mistake: using an Indian generic MRL panel and hoping for the best. EU customs DG SANTE rejects shipments that don't pass border MRL testing. Aethon tests pre-shipment.
2. EU Organic (Reg 2018/848)
EU Organic requires certification by an EU-recognized control body. Aethon partners with India-based certifiers operating under EU equivalence (NPOP-EU recognition). Organic claims on retail packaging in EU require this certification.
If you're not selling under "organic" labeling at retail, conventional pricing applies — saves 4–6 weeks on first-order and 15–25% on per-kg pricing.
3. TRACES NT Pre-Notification
TRACES NT (Trade Control and Expert System) is the EU's electronic pre-notification system for plant-origin products requiring border control. Some Indian exports (fresh produce, certain spices) require TRACES NT entry by your customs broker before vessel arrival.
Common mistake: assuming the exporter handles TRACES — it's the importer's responsibility, but we provide the data inputs (Phytosanitary number, lot detail) for direct entry.
4. Port-of-Entry Strategy
Rotterdam (Netherlands) is Europe's largest port and the most efficient first-entry point for India-origin shipments — re-export to Germany, France, Belgium, UK, Scandinavia is straightforward. Hamburg is competitive for Northern Europe; Antwerp for Belgium / Netherlands; Genoa for Italy / Mediterranean.
Strategy: ship to the cheapest EU port (Rotterdam usually); trans-load by truck or barge for inland delivery.
5. Brexit / UK Customs
The UK is no longer in EU customs (post-Brexit). Shipments to UK require UK-specific docs: HMRC import declaration, GB EORI number on the buyer side, and UK MRL panel testing (currently aligned to EU but tracked separately).
Felixstowe, London Gateway, Southampton are the main UK ports for India-origin agri shipments. Aethon documentation handles UK separately from EU 27.
6. EU-Format Phytosanitary
EU customs requires Phytosanitary Certificates issued in EU-recognized format with TRACES NT-compatible numbering. Aethon's documentation team formats Phyto certificates for direct EU acceptance.
Common mistake: a generic Phytosanitary Certificate may need re-issue if the format isn't EU-compliant. Aethon issues EU-format from the start for EU-bound shipments.
