INDIA TO CANADA · AGRI EXPORT

Compliant from Mundra to Vancouver / Halifax.

Canada is one of the strongest North American destinations for Indian spice and dry-fruit imports — driven by a 1.4 million-strong South Asian diaspora concentrated in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal, plus growing premium-spice retail and food-manufacturer demand. India–Canada bilateral agricultural trade exceeded USD 1 billion in 2024, with cashews, basmati rice, cumin, turmeric, and dehydrated vegetables leading the trade.

Aethon Overseas is an APEDA-registered, FSSAI-licensed Indian agricultural exporter shipping to Canadian importers via Mundra and JNPT to Vancouver, Halifax, Montreal, and Toronto (via Halifax inland). Every Canada-bound shipment ships with NABL COA, SFCA-aligned documentation, CFIA-format Phytosanitary Certificate, and (on request) Canadian Organic Regime certification.

What Canadian Buyers Need to Know

How Canadian importers source Indian agricultural products — CFIA compliance, Canadian Organic, port-of-entry strategy, and inland distribution from Halifax / Vancouver.

1. CFIA Compliance

Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is the federal body overseeing food imports. Some Indian agri categories require a CFIA Import Permit (e.g., fresh produce); others fall under general food-safety rules.

Aethon's documentation aligns with CFIA's Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) lookup for the specific HS code per shipment.

2. Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA)

SFCA requires importers to hold a Safe Food for Canadians (SFC) License and implement preventive control plans for imported food. Aethon provides supplier-side documentation supporting your SFC compliance.

Common mistake: assuming the exporter holds the SFC license — it's the Canadian importer's. Aethon facilitates with documented supplier verification.

3. Canadian Organic Regime (COR)

Canada accepts both Canadian Organic Regime (COR) and USDA NOP via the US-Canada Organic Equivalence Arrangement. For organic claims on Canadian retail packaging, COR or NOP certification is required.

Aethon partners with Indian certifiers operating under COR / NOP equivalence. Adds 4–6 weeks first-order lead time if needed.

4. Port-of-Entry Strategy

West Coast (Vancouver): 30–35 days from India, best for Western Canada (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba). East Coast (Halifax, Montreal): 28–32 days, best for Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada — onward to Toronto by rail or truck (~1,500 km Halifax–Toronto).

Strategy: Halifax for Toronto-bound shipments via rail; Vancouver for BC / Western Canada direct.

5. Pesticide MRL (Health Canada)

Health Canada sets pesticide MRLs through the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA). MRLs are largely aligned with US EPA but with some differences. Our NABL COA tests against the Canadian-applicable panel for shipments destined to Canada.

Common mistake: assuming a US EPA panel covers Canada — it usually does, but specific differences exist. We confirm panel match per destination.

6. Bonded Warehouse / Sufferance Warehouse

Canada has Sufferance Warehouses near major ports (Vancouver, Halifax, Montreal) where imported goods can be held under customs control before duty payment.

Aethon documentation supports Sufferance Warehouse entry where buyers request — Bill of Lading and Commercial Invoice formatted appropriately.
